Not really. The graphics market is already accelerating too fast for newcomers like Intel to catch up, particularly when you have experienced guys like nVidia, 3dfx, Matrox, and S3 already working overtime to outdo each other. That leads to margins that are too small for Intel's stand-alone graphics accelerators, making it a prime candidate for the axe.

It's big news because

1) It was big news when Intel entered

2) It affects a lot of other companies

3) Graphics (3D) is a key tech area which uses a lot of silicon (in increasing amounts) and has a need for speed, so it's an area where Intel should be able to leverage its manufacturing and design skills

4) Intel spent $430 million to aquire C&T and invested in / partnered with Real3D
