Another rumor is that there is a shortage of mid-renge hard drives, and the spot price of all hard drives is firming up lately.

It's not really impossible. After all, WDC's production facilities are in Malaysia, not the U.S. That being said, I have no idea as to the credibility of those rumors; I only know that the idea has been floating around for a while now.
