People should fend for themselves and not look for a government to sort out their troubles, support them, manage their lives for them, think for them or provide for them from cradle to grave. I am not confused, although I grant you there is much confusion on this thread. What you call an arbitrary and cruel system was a free, non-coercive system. If I did what I really want to do which is not allow any of the money I create to be used for any program I am opposed to, including social security, what do you think the government will do to me? If your answer is anything other than "nothing" then you admit we no longer live in a free society; If you answer "nothing," we both know that is an untruth.

Hello Kentucky Child, I was a child in West Virginia...I lived during the great depression and Since my Parents owned the Village General Store + the Garage and Service Station..They became the SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEM FOR THE VILLAGE.. I STILL LOVE TO BE A BAREFOOT HILLBILLY..:-) Even when I am travelling in a Limousine:-)))) Never did care what other people think...lol P.S. Good reply...but what the hell have statistics have to do with it..they LIE' I remember the CCC Camps ...The WPA ...I recall the ladies in the Village making Mattresses...I REMEMBER so much of past History. Do not be deluded ..It can happen again.. We were able to handle it..your generation cannot and it would be a great way to destroy a massive slice of the UPPER MIDDLE CLASS population...My Silent Generation (Korean War) are being relegated to the NURSING HOMES (Death Camps) via the LEGAL DRUG TRAFFIC. Better open your eyes :-( No Country in History has ever permitted a wealthy Middle Class. Just long enough to make a lot of money for the Rulers to grab...."Let them eat Cake" Marie Antoinette said it best...:-)
