>>nobody needs no stinking variables. :)

You know, it's a funny thing about those auction counts. They only tell half the story. It would be great if eBay also published the stat of the number of auctions that have bids. Because if you peruse through the auction categories in eBay, you will notice that many auctions have no bids - in fact, I would guess that half the auctions have no bids at any given time. And it would also be great if eBay published a stat indicating the number of auctions that close with a bid or close with a bid above the reserve price.

Auction counts give us a gauge for how many sellers are trying to sell. They tell us nothing, however, about how many items are being sold, or how many bidders are flocking to eBay to bid on items. Why doesn't eBay publish these additional stats? Either because it is too much information to fit into "sound-bite" analysis and may lend unnecessary confusion to the decision making process of the average investor - or because they paint a different picture of the business that is taking place on eBay.

We don't need no stinkin' stats!

Thanks,
-Eric
