The Enterprise Appliance is Coming!

Sun's Executive Shuffle

Tirado leaves for start-up firm.

By Deborah Gage, Sm@rt Reseller

Software president Alan Baratz is not the only high-profile exec to
depart Sun Microsystems this month. Sun also is searching for a
replacement for VP Steve Tirado, who has left Sun's Network
Computer Division to join a start-up company.

Tirado's departure surprised some Sun partners, since Sun will
launch in New York next month a Java-based "enterprise
appliance" that is supposed to fulfill some of the promise that
Sun's JavaStation did not.

But Tirado says that while he is "very excited" by Sun's upcoming
offering, the opportunity to become VP of marketing at Silicon
Image Inc. was too good to pass up.

Silicon Image developed the technology behind the Digital Visual
Interface specification, which defines a high-speed data link
between digital displays and their hosts, and will go public soon.
Intel is entitled to purchase shares and has signed a patent
license agreement with Silicon Image, according to an amended
S1 filed with the SEC. ...

I don't know how Sun's 'enterprise appliance' will compare with Alcatel's which I have seen and like very much, but if successful we will be opening a whole new era of connecting to the internet without traditional PCs. I presume at first the target markets will be different with Sun's Corona targeting business and Alcatel targeting consumers. I understand Alcatel's product will be sold through AOL.

MAJC combines multiprocessing, multithreading features

eetimes.com

"Multithreading will be the next hot topic in microprocessor architectures," said Marc Tremblay, chief architect for the MAJC project. "Most chips today that are attempting to incorporate parallel processing are doing it at the instruction level, but we are focusing on the thread level, which delivers much more performance."

Multithreading involves breaking down the various tasks in one or more applications into several threads and scheduling them for the most efficient use of the microprocessor's computing power. When one task results in a cache-miss, the processor will have an idle period while the system imports data from the main memory. Multithreading allows the CPU to work on a different thread during that down time. "The overall throughput is much higher," said Tremblay. "While the first thread will finish at about the same time as it would on a traditional CPU, in this case the same processor can complete several other things at the same time."
