If the technology is available in an affordable package, it seems that virtually no one has figured out how, or from whom, to acquire it. This includes the SDSU Computational Studies group, SGI and many others with a need for very large amounts of bandwidth.

From the press release: "Many of SGI's customers work with files that are over 300 Gigabytes (GBs) in size," said Greg Estes, vice president Marketing, Communications and Media, SGI. "The ability to transfer these files over long distances with minimal delay and cost will help many of our broadband media, high performance computing and other high volume customers." In their business, you have to believe that they are aware of, and in fact, would be using an existing alternative technology.

I attended the "Technology Infrastructure Link" conference at SDSU which was mentioned in the press release. Representatives from education, government, the medical community, as well as the business community, were clamoring for a solution to their bandwidth problems. These were people that currently measure bandwidth based on how fast they can personally deliver or 'FedEx' a tape to their counterparts. Jacob Diedjomahor, the gentleman from the "major oil company" that performed the test, is one of the top people in the field of oil exploration. His company really is a "major oil company", not a small local outfit. They haven't found the solution. If there is an alternative, somebody please come to the table!

At first glance, Gigabit Ethernet would seem like an affordable technology for users such as SDSU. But....

Note the distances specified.

Again, note that the SR demo utilized the single OC-12 (622 Mbs) interface installed in the SGI Origin servers. In addition, please note that a second test was recently performed across a 'hodge-podge' of spliced-together cables totaling 47 km.
