Never had that experience, no. I DID venture onto some thin stuff and hear that crackling sound though. Combined with that sudden sagging sensation - it was not a confidence-boosting experience.

One winter I was up at a friend's place in the mountains north of where I live. There's a little spring-fed lake up above her place, nestled in a very small valley between two mountaintops. We went skating there one afternoon. Very strange sensation...

The ice was as smooth as glass and very thick and clear, but the water beneath looked absolutely black. When you skated across the lake, it was like you were skating on a night sky... very beautiful but somewhat unsettling.
