Crude oil firms on talk of winter shortfall - Financial Times, Friday

Crude oil prices firmed yesterday as underlying sentiment in the
market remained positive. The bellwether Brent Blend
futures contract for October was quoted at $20.82 a barrel in late
trading on London's International Petroleum Exchange, 25 cents
up on Wednesday's close. Crude prices continue to be
supported by speculative buying, according to Gary
Ross of the Pira consultancy in New York.

He says the recent price surge is evidence that
speculators expect a possible supply shortfall this winter
in the northern hemisphere if the Organisation of
Petroleum Exporting Countries maintains its high
compliance rate with agreed production cuts. By
contrast, oil company traders have built up mainly short
positions. This, he says, is a reflection of relatively high
physical inventories.

XTO The company looks interesting at these prices. Why does it have such a high short interest? Does anyone know the reason for the heavy volume on 8/19? The stock had an upgrade today FWIW.
