Dell In Irish Hiring Drive; Reflects European Growth

DUBLIN (Dow Jones)--U.S. computer maker Dell Computer Corp. (DELL) said Thursday it wants to add 800 more employees to its Irish operations by the end of the year in a move that reflects its continued growth in Europe.

The company has its European manufacturing facilities in Limerick and a sales and support center just south of Dublin. In total the company currently employs more than 4,000 people in Ireland. The new jobs will be split between these two locations.

Dell also said its third manufacturing facility in Ireland - which was announced in September 1998 - will be operational by the end of this year and will employ a further 1,700 people "if market conditions continue as expected."

Dell is the third largest company operating in Ireland and one of the biggest employers.

"This recruitment drive reflects our continued growth in Europe," said John Legere, president of Dell Europe, Middle East and Africa. "Ireland is critical to our success."

He said in the company's most recent results announced earlier this week showed that European sales were up 24% and shipments rose by more than twice the regional industry rate in the second quarter.

Legere said the company is now ranked as the number one supplier in Ireland and the U.K. and second in all of western Europe.

Dell claims the top position in the U.K. for desktops with an 18.6% market share, the company said in a press release Thursday. In notebooks and servers, Dell ranked second in both categories with market shares of 18.9% and 19.9%, respectively.

In Ireland, the company has the top spot in desktops with a 26.5% market share and a 30.8% position in notebooks.

Hi kemble,
I sure woke up laughing with your remarks.
Well, Dorine...we're NOT that dumb...both of us have a very strict investment philosophy: ACCUMULATE SHARES...NEVER SELL DELL

The only reason I graduated was because they needed the desk space and I was so terrible in spelling, I never learned how to spell SELL I thought it was spelled BUY
Truthfully, I had a very hard time in school. My sister was two grades before me and every teacher expected me to emulate her, I didn't thank God. VBG.

As it turns out, I was the succesful one in business, have traveled all over the world, married the most wonderful man , accumalated real estate and NOW DELL.

God is good and so is DELL

Dorine
ps. See, I am still spelling words wrong. ha ha
