Well actually, good for grandma. My life has been a cakewalk in comparison. But I thank you in the memory of my grandmother.

I'll tell you something else about her. She was a hard hard woman. She was scarred by poverty and so was my mother. It was not an ennobling experience. My grandmother became something of a prostitute to make ends meet. She cooked meals for men in her building and did other services. My mother was raped my one of these men (my grandmother made her call them "uncles"). My grandmother was coarse and vulgar and could not be tender. She was very intelligent, and when she was in her teens the family she worked for as a maid wanted to send her to highschool- but her mother insisted she go right to work. Great grandmother thought education was for grasshoppers, and she wanted my grandmother to be an ant. Which is what she was. A poor ignorant ant, who could have had a much better life with some education and less hardship. And my mother would have been a less damaged person too. My mother went literally nuts when I was a child and abused me. I do not excuse the abuse, but I know what she suffered.
