Walter,
I'm no techie but from what I have previously read about one watermarking technology......

I don't remember what system it was or where I read it but it stated that even if you record a song with a microphone and then reconverted it back into digital to be sent over email or stored on your computer, that the watermarking would stay with it. It is actually a part of the music. I think it said there were 100 bits of information stored in each second of music. It also stated that you could record it repeatedly with a microphone several times and the watermarking would still be there.

Any tech savy people here know what I'm talking about?

Mark

Of all measures to protect data, DSS type systems has been one of the most successful and even it can be worked around, although at a high price and uncertainty (DirecTV has sent out many signals to destroy or disable "pirate" cards). IMHO, the current schemes are nothing more than a way to make it difficult to pirate (refer back to a very long post of mine regarding piracy & MP3) so as to make piracy unattractive to the mass market. But, alas, there will likely be a crack or work around until we actually tie ones legitimate purchases into a central checking system (which is somewhat key cards such as DirecTV cards do). The current scheme which SDMI has been discussing is passive security....DirecTV is more similar to an active, on-going security system. The question is whether or not the consumer is willing to carry a card key with them or is willing to forego their privacy and convenience to have an ongoing active system which verifies each & every use of a song.
