Re: why should Intel want to offer a variant?

Timna has video and a memory controller on board, but no memory on board. As a competitor in the low end, it would be most sensitive to added memory cost. If the pricing of rambus can be brought down, then the savings of a reduced pin count ($5,$10? - a whole 400+ pin chipset is less than $40, a motherboard with 64 bit bus around $100) could keep rambus from making the chip unmarketable.

So Intel might elect to support a less expensive memory option for timna.
