Water depth doesn't enter into it (as far as I know), compressor stations are generally part of surface equipment because they are maintenance intensive.

My knowledge of compressors is tied to thoses used on the rigs. Typically a roots-type or screw compressor is used where high volumes of air are required, whereas a positive displacement type is used when high pressure is the requirement.

Any pipeline engineering types out there?
