BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 20, 1999-- drugstore.com (NASDAQ:DSCM) has announced new appointments to its board of directors.

Melinda French Gates has been appointed a director of drugstore.com. Mrs. Gates worked at Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) from 1987 to May 1996 in a variety of positions, including serving both as product manager and general manager for the development of several multi-media products and other software programs. Since leaving Microsoft in 1996, Mrs. Gates has focused on philanthropic work in the areas of global health and learning. She is a founder of the William H. Gates Foundation and Gates Learning Foundation. Mrs. Gates also is focused on efforts to bring computers, Internet access and training to public libraries in low-income communities through a major Library Initiative. She serves as co-chair of the Washington State Early Learning Commission and serves on the advisory board of Third Age Media. Mrs. Gates holds a Bachelor of Arts from Duke University and an MBA from The Fuqua School of Business at Duke. She is currently serving as a member of the Duke University Board of Trustees.

Martin L. Grass has been appointed a director of drugstore.com. Mr. Grass has been chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Rite Aid Corporation (RAD: NYSE, PSE) since March 1995. Previously, Mr. Grass was president and chief operating officer of Rite Aid since April 1989, had been executive vice president for three years and prior thereto had served as senior vice president. He has served Rite Aid in various capacities since 1978. Mr. Grass has been a member of the Rite Aid board of directors since 1982.

Additionally, drugstore.com has announced that Jed Smith, the founder of drugstore.com, is leaving the company to pursue a new entrepreneurial venture, details of which are to be announced at a later date. During his tenure at drugstore.com, Mr. Smith was the initial president, served as a director of the company and as the vice president of strategic partnerships. He secured the company's original financing from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, helped develop key partnerships, including those with Amazon.com and Rite Aid, and helped recruit the drugstore.com management team. Mr. Smith continues to be an investor in drugstore.com.
