There is some suggestion above that Ameritrade may be losing marketshare to E*Trade.

It's not a suggestion, it's actually true and the gap has been widening. Just take a look at their account growths over the last quarter. E*Trade has picked up more accounts in the last 6 months than Ameritrade has total. That's why, E*Trade would never merge with an Ameritrade. There is no money in it other than taking them out of the competition and even that's not worth the money. E*Trade forever.
