They sort of scraped your skin with it. I still have the vaccination mark on my arm; that was before they switched over to kids' thighs, where the mark was thought to be less unsightly.

I got both, Salk and Sabin ~ one was an injection, and one was oral. The oral was a sugar solution in a little paper cup, I think we had three of those. My father was in dental school when we got the injections, we went to a public clinic in New Orleans, with three kids and my dad in college, we qualified to live in the public projects. The oral we had after we moved to Baton Rouge, we went to Westdale Junior High and stood in a long line, and there were long tables set up in the cafeteria, and lots of people handing out the cups with lots of cups set up in front of them. Every kid all over the country did that, I expect, in one way or another. I must have been in fourth grade if we went to Westdale, so that would have been about 1960.
