Volpe Brown has it backwards:

RESEARCH ALERT - Alloy Online raised to strong buy

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Volpe Brown Whelan & Co. raised Alloy Online Inc. to strong buy from buy, based on ''compelling'' relative valuation and several near-term positive catalysts, analyst Derek Brown said Monday.

-- Alloy, which markets to ''Generation Y'' consumers, is trading at 4.5 times estimated fiscal 2000 gross profits, compared with competitor iTurf Inc., which is trading at 17.9 times estimates gross profits, Brown said in a report.

-- Alloy also should benefit from seasonal shopping patterns in coming months and an aggressive marketing campaign, among other factors, he said.

-- Alloy was up 2-15/16 at 12-3/4.

I believe that Volpe Brown is wrong in its comparative analysis of TURF and ALOY. We'll know more by the end of the week when both companies report 2nd Quarter results. In the meantime, compare the 1st Quarter results from both companies and tell me how Volpe Brown could possibly reach its conclusion:

ALOY's 1st Quarter results:

TURF's 1st Quarter results:
