With the records, the most important thing is the piece of furniture they are on, it's kind of a bookcase, but much heavier wood. It's my own invention, it consists of five 2x12 shelves, six feet long, held up by six 2x4s, which each have notches cut into them, evenly spaced, that the shelves fit into. There are a pair at each end, and a pair in the center. There are no metal pieces, and the pieces aren't glued, either, once it is assembled, and the records put on it, the weight of the records holds it together, and makes it immovable. My husband and I used to work in radio stations, and we know other people with record collections, and nothing thinner than a 2X12 will hold the weight of a vinyl record collection without warping. It's made of unfinished pine, but over the years the pine has mellowed to a honey color.

My husband has the records arranged by category, and alphabetically within each category, and woe betide you if you mess with the arrangement. He also has a shelf thingie from Costco to hold his CDs, and plastic cases for his cassette tapes. We use 20-year-old Advent speakers, which have been rebuilt, a Dual turntable, and a Fisher amplifier. Everything still in good condition. Not high-tech audiophile stuff, but works fine.
