Sanyo plans digital audio player for Net downloads
TOKYO, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Japanese consumer electronics firm Sanyo Electric Co Ltd said on Monday it would launch a portable digital audio player in both the domestic and overseas markets by next spring.

Portable digital audio players allow users to play back digital music downloaded from the Internet.

Sanyo said its player will be compatible with several different music compression methods used by music distribution Web sites, such as ``MP3' and ``AAC,' which compress digital music so it takes up far less space on a computer's hard disk and can be sent more quickly over the Internet.

The player will use digital signal processors from chip maker Texas Instruments Inc (NYSE:TXN - news).

It will also have copyright protection technology from music software company Liquid Audio Inc (Nasdaq:LQID - news), means it will conform with the Secure Digital Music Initiative, a recording industry effort to develop an online music system that prevents unauthorised music duplication and piracy.

Sanyo will aim for first-year sales of 100,000 units and will price the players to compete with MD (mini disc) players already on the market at around 20,000 yen.

Sanyo also said it was developing terminals to be placed in convenience stores and department stores from which digital data including music and images could be downloaded.
