I'll never forget the doctor who punctured my eardrum (I had an infection) when he assured me he was just going to look at it.

Obviously, he knew I would make for the door (or at least start screaming) if he told me what he really planned to do. In later years, of course, he would just have given me an antibiotic.

But to this day, I get nervous when a doctor wants to examine my ears.

P.S. On the other hand, in those days, doctors would come to your home. In fact, they used to do that right up to (through?) the sixties.
