As I predicted some months ago, industry support for Merced is weakening. HP are planning to wait for McKinley. If this pattern is reproduced throughout the industry, with Merced being little more than a "proof of concept", the lifetime of IA32 in servers will be extended significantly.

In these circumstances memory bandwidth will be critical as IA-32 processor speeds increase (Expect 900MHz-1GHz by the end of 2000). Systems using multiple Rambus channels are the obvious answer.
