re : At Fry's today, they said they would have Athlon chips and motherboards early September.

In holland we seem to have this most exceptional thing happening...whereas we used to get every major breaktrough in hardware about a month later than USA/the east (korea etc), things start to look good.

K7 ..erhh...athlon, can be bought, including motherboards, from various stores now, at competitive prices.

K7 500 is dirt cheap, and lots of em seem to exist.
K7 550 is competive with p3 550 (about 20-25% cheaper), and the 600 is slightly cheaper compared to p3 600 (about $50)
K7-650 doesnt seem to be in stock at the stores, but you can order it and have it in about a week. For $1250, that is:)

MSI seems to be the widest spread -speaking of motherboards- ,altough I have seen some FIC and gigabyte , but not many.

re: "My guess on ASP for Athlon is closer to $300."

My understanding is that the speed bin distribution of ATHLONs has been a surprise to everyone; even the more optimistic people at AMD. This is, in part, is the reason for the very early introduction of the 650 MHz part. $400 may not turn out to be so optimistic. Also 250,000 may in fact turn out to be very conservative, the real issue is how many MoBo's the boxmakers can get their hands on and how soon.
