Ron, I have no argument with you on this subject--I agree wholeheartedly that basic supplies for emergency should be part of every home. For pity's sake, I keep candles, water, some canned food, batteries (in the refrigerator as they last longer when chilled), and a flashlight on hand for any emergency.

OTOH, I keep a canned Danish ham at the ready for unexpected guests as well. (Drain, score and hit the XZs with cloves; grate a nutmeg or sprinkle with powdered nutmeg; spread your favorite mild mustard; pour a can of decent beer all over it and bake for one hour, basting every 20 minutes or so. Place smells like a brewery, but it's a great dish to save the day. Want my Y2K version?)
