While Compaq is angering the Aussies, DELL is winning their friendship. Got this from DELL's Asian-Pacific web site. Great place.

DELL GOES BUSH IN SUPPORT OF CHILDRENS' CHARITIES

Sydney, August 12 1999 — If this year's NSW Variety Club Bash encounters any fires during the trek from the Olympic Site Brickpit to Broome, the Dell Computer Young Variety Club Team will be well equipped to take charge.

Thanks to generous sponsorship from Sydney-based (Frenchs Forest-based) Dell Computer, the first ever Young Variety Club team to participate in the B-B Bash is travelling in two EH Holdens and a 1930s fire truck.

The Dell Computer Young Variety Club Team is made up of 10 young men from Sydney who have all taken leave from their jobs to raise money for the Variety Club, which supports a range of children's charities.

The vehicles are all decorated with enormous Dell logos and the team members are taking very seriously the Bash mandate that the sillier and more devious you are, the more money you can raise.

The Dell Computer Young Variety Club Team hopes to raise a total of more than $100,000 by the time the Bash winds up in Broome.

Although the NSW Variety Club Bash has taken place every year since adventurer Dick Smith initiated the original one in 1985, this is the first time the Young Variety Club has taken part.

Their team includes a member of the Ugly Phil radio program, which airs on 2Day-FM on Monday-Friday nights, and they've been keeping listeners and supporters up to date on their escapades through live crosses.

The teams have seen some of Australia's most spectacular scenery as they trekked their way through the red centre and up into the northern reaches of WA, travelling around 6,000 kilometres in just 12 days.

Along the way, they have visited many of the nation's most remote communities, experiencing true bush hospitality in places like Coober Pedy, Halls Creek and Kununurra.

In addition to its financial sponsorship, Dell equipped the Young Variety Club Team with hundreds of Dell pens, T-shirts and other promotional goodies to hand out to people they meet along the way, giving local residents a lasting memento of the Brickpit to Broome Bash.
