re: merced will be dominant------

Merced will be the biggest non-event of 2000. No performance, no software, no significant platforms, even co-development partners like HP trying to cover for the fact that Merced is not viable. Intel made a huge mistake by spinning up the press and their ISV machinery around IA64 when they could not execute, now they will have to do damage control for at least a year.

Unfortunately, the biggest beneficiaries of the Intel IA64 problems may be Sun (I say unfortunately because I hold no SUNW).

Not sure what you mean about McKinley. It will be the first volume IA64 chip when it finally comes out, probably in late 2001 or early 2002 but at the moment it is just a vapor product, a placeholder for "when Intel gets it right". Intel has the process to produce these chips but lacks the stroke and industry clout to do the rest of the job. Intel has never had to evangelize a completely new architecture - they could always count on that loyal base of X86 users and developers to get base volume. What if Intel holds an IA64 party and no one comes?

Having said that I think Intel will eventually get it right but I doubt if there will be any significant impact before mid-2002, which is a little farther out than my current investment decision horizon.
