Just one caution on the perception of "lots of intellectual capital" - yes, the people they hire are exceptional - but the last I checked, Broadcom had four US patents. Not a big number in the grand scheme of things. As to the quality of these patents, I am not a good judge of that. If the patents solve fundamental problems they may be able to start a decent licensing program.

Broadcom may have more applications in the USPTO which have yet to be issued, but that is anyone's speculation. Given the business they are in, it will require IP protection. I suspect they will be patenting as much as they can.
