STAMFORD, Conn. and ATLANTA, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Time Warner Cable and
Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (NYSE: SFA) today announced Time Warner has
launched
digital services over Explorer(R) 2000 digital, two-way set-tops to paying
customers in 18 systems giving millions of subscribers access to digital
services
over Time Warner's cutting-edge, fiber optic networks, based on the
advanced
technology of Scientific-Atlanta's digital, two-way system.
For example, subscribers in the Tampa Bay, Florida area (877,000
subscribers),
San Antonio, TX (326,000 subscribers), Austin, TX (266,000 subscribers) and
Oceanic, HI (337,000 subscribers) are being offered digital services using
Scientific-Atlanta's Explorer 2000 digital, two-way set-tops.
To date, Scientific-Atlanta has installed digital headend equipment in more
than
30 of Time Warner's largest systems. Those systems represent more than 60%
of
Time Warner's subscriber base; therefore, when the 35 initial systems are
launched, more than 8 million of Time Warner's subscribers are expected to
be
able to receive digital services. The balance of Time Warner's 12.9 million
customers will be able to receive digital services by the end of the year
2000.
As previously announced, Time Warner is planning to purchase 1.1 million
Explorer
2000 set-tops, with an option for 500,000 additional units.
Additionally, Time Warner recently ordered 500 Explorer 2000 HDTV set-tops,
which
enable decoding of HDTV programming via a set-top.
Time Warner Cable and Scientific-Atlanta have long collaborated on
developing the
key components of a two-way, digital broadband network. The two companies
pioneered much of the technology that led to the OpenCable specifications
for an
open, fully interoperable advanced digital network.
"Customer response to our initial rollouts of digital television has been
very
positive," said Thomas M. Rutledge, Senior Executive Vice President of Time
Warner Cable. "They are very pleased with the features of the Explorer 2000
set-top and the additional services it offers. We are very optimistic of
continuing strong consumer demand for our digital television product as we
accelerate our launches across the country over the balance of this year
and
next. Plus, we are eager to offer additional enhanced interactive services,
such
as video-on-demand, on this platform in the months to come."
Scientific-Atlanta is the primary network integrator and supplier of
network
equipment, and the largest supplier of digital set-tops, for Time Warner
Cable.
These networks are designed to bring next-generation
