Actually, in most rural areas, a tv is of lot greater value to people than a phone and a pair of shoes. A tv is escapism for a ton of people who have no means of entertainment. Govts will not subsidize phone calls. Places where there is no wireline telephony has more important needs like water, electricity, food, roads etc. However, I do believe there is a market for MSS in oil rigs, armed forces etc. The vertical market segments are lucrative.

With expanding cellular coverage, a person using a G* dual mode phone will not be giving G* incremental revenues from the calls made in cellular mode

Jim, good post. Seems to me that the arguments against G* come mainly from people that view the world differently from the longs and of course we hope/believe they're wrong. For me, the world is both smaller and bigger than most G* bears believe. Smaller in the sense that knowledge of and desire for western mod con's is nearly universal; larger in the sense that the expense entailed with bringing good comm capabilities to many regions of the world is so large that it will never happen in our lifetimes, even if there was no logical and nearly in place satellite alternative solution.

Somewhat unrelated, but it occurs to me that a piece of "low hanging fruit" for N. American G* SPs will be in states like Colorado and Montana. I remember reading that significant parts of these states are being carved into "ranchettes" ranging in size from 10-1000 acres. Robert Redford wannabes living in or maintaining households there will gladly afford G* service to and have no practical alternative, IMO.

Mr. Parkinson:

I read your last post and loved the example of the gentleman from central Idaho. Just wanted to add that you don't have to go to CENTRAL Idaho to find places out of adequate cellphone range. I spend a lot of time each day commuting on I-15 in southeastern Idaho and I can assure you that I am out of adequate cellphone range for much of my daily commute.

So rajaja (or whatever the hell your name is), before you make some smart ass remark about there only being 10 people in central Idaho, believe me, there are a LOT of people in Idaho outside cellphone range.

Having said that, I must confess that I continue to believe that the greatest market for G* by far will be in the Third World where, I am convinced, there are many more people in need of G* service than any of GSTRF's many critics presently believe. I think GSTRF's critics will be even more surprised to learn that many of those people can indeed pay for the service, too!
