But you can't sneak up on this island--you either come by ferry, and the cops watch many of the ferries unload to see whether anybody they "know" is returning, or you come by private boat or plane, in which case lots of people see you. Makes crime fairly low here -- nowhere to go to get away, and if you steal a car what are you going to do with it? Well, crime is low except for murder/manslaughter -- about ten years ago we had an unrelated spate of murder/manslaughters which for a brief period gave us the highest murder rate of any county in the country! But things have calmed down since then and we're back to cherry bombs in peoples mailboxes and CDs snatched off the front seats of cars left unlocked, as of course most of us still do.
