Intel = Value PC, Athlon = Performance PC : IBM

Interesting to look at IBM's Retail PC lineup for the fall season. Pentium IIIs in the value "E" line and Athlons in the performance "S" line. Given the relative performance of the two chips, we should see more of that.

With a little luck, Intel can keep its ASPs from falling too far. They were about $80 above breakeven a month ago, before the current price cuts (at around $225), how low will they be by the end of the year? With all of those Celerons and cheap PIIIs, do you think Intel will be able to hold $150 in Q1? At that point, Intel is a breakeven company.

AMD was about $40 below breakeven (at around $70) - how much higher will that be by year end with the Athlon added in? With a 50-50 mix of Athlons and k6s, AMD ASPs should come in around $175 for Q1. At which point AMD mints money.

Dan

<<Now that is a truly "idiotic" statement ... I'm sure that IBM would "fund"
AMD while Dell, Gateway, Compaq, HP sat back and "watched" the generosity
of IBM. Ha, ha, ha ... Now I can see why you have lost money being "short"
and you are well on your way to being another "investing genius".>>

ahh...Yousef...a name caller..."idiotic" it is today....i imagine you have been called that a lot for you to use the term...i don't need to call people names...i feel sure of myself..
when a reply comes from someone (who hasn't been provoked) & it is name calling....,it really shows how immature the reply source is.

anyway...to the point:
i'm not saying IBM alone....just the industry in general does not want to be at the beck and call of intel; to have INTC as their sole source of a microprocessor might not agree with the rest of the industry...Yousef may or may not understand this...as you may have noticed...AMD is already receiving various types of support.

I guess you think the computer world wants to have only INTC as a supplier...look in the mirror and ask yousef that question.......
and make it so...
