You want to know what would really happen? Watch the Italian film "Swept Away," the answer is there.

I agree with most of what you said. I haven't said that I myself would cooperate in propagation. There is the suffering that has been life for most humans to be considered. I am not sure what would happen if such a scenario played out and my consciousness were the female's.

Before I got to what my, or any other person's wishes, would be in this situation, I got in my bonnet the bee of seeing if I could stipulate a woman who did NOT feel as I do, ambivalent about whether life is a general blessing or isn't, there on the earth with the last man-- the man is an environmentalist, say, hehehe, who thinks definitely it is his ethical obligation to save species, including homo sapiens' -- and get anyone to agree that, given her reasons, she was 'selfish.'

I wonder if she would be selfish not to mate with him if all the people were still alive and by... OOPS! never mind!

Anyway, of COURSE selfishness is not the only reason, X! I thought the most interesting discussion might be about two individuals who had conscientious positions, but opposite ones. What would their ethical obligations be then?

If a vilely repellent hypothetical rapist had said to me, "Lie still and let me rape you or I will render your son sterile," I would have lain right down. Most mothers would. My son is just one person.

Your point about the law and morality of this society of two being determined anew by them is profound and original to this discussion, I think.

I've been PMing on this subject too, and am about talked out on it.

If I were the last man in the world, and there was but one woman left, young, beautiful, and alluring, we would have to discuss our plans for family very carefully. No baby sitters -- so a kid would mean no Fridays out for her. No diaper service (unless we had a dog). Another mouth to feed, with no job or welfare. It's her decision it seems to me. No chance at Harvard for the kid, or a good career. If the woman was into love-making the kid would be a real nuisance for many years, but probably would need little sex education.
And so many things left to read before we croaked. Plenty of opportunity, but hard to get the motivation going to write. No one to post to or argue with. Sort of sad. Rape seems to me to be out of the question. I would expect far more pressing problems to be addressed. Questions of love, and contraception. Of course, there would be no problem about picking a place to live (the schools and stores are all the same anywhere).
