Mason WAS great as Captain Nemo, especially in his scene with the giant squid. <g>

I have always remembered that scene, because it struck me so forcefully at the time, many years ago, when I saw it. On the one hand, the contrast between Mason's supremely intelligent face and the totally mindless snout (or whatever you call it) of the squid; on the other hand, the contrast between the physical frailty of this supremely intelligent being and the raw power of the brute, which could easily have gobbled Mason right up, without the slightest awareness that it was stuffing its stupid stomach with something infinitely superior to itself....

I guess I saw the scene as a symbol: say, of the light, or the candle, of reason. flickering in the darkness, always in danger of being blown out for good.

Yes, I believe that came just after his triumph in A Star is Born, which is considered the best version, the most recent being the worst.
