I think we have a misunderstanding here that can be straightened out. Let me explain why I interpreted two things as antagonistic that, I see, were not intended to be. Maybe we can agree that I was having an off-moment where my sense of humor is concerned, and you were not as wholly clear in your innocuous intention as you intended to be. Here is the paragraph I interpreted as showing hostility or contempt for the Grammar thread people. I'll just say about it that when I took you up on it, I mentioned that "You aren't the first person to express contempt for the word-arguments and games some of us play, usually on the Grammar thread, and I don't understand it." So you can see that I perceived it as "Again? What's with these people?", whereas for you, it was a first mention. Anyway, here's the sarcastic and disdainful paragraph that caused me to make a (serious) inquiry. <<<I eagerly await another essay on OED trivia and the ensuing debate. Now that's interesting! As critically important as language is, I'm almost ready to say, "Let's give Eubonics a chance!" It's my strong opinion that some of this OED one-upsmanship is about as smug and elitist as it gets. Good sport among the right sort of inbred Englishmen at a weekend gathering in the country. >>> And you tossed in, in the next post, the also-disdainful last sentence of this comment: "Have as much fun as you can. Seriously. Just don't expect me to take it seriously." Okay. So that's how we arrived at this mini-confrontation. It's not important stuff, really, to either of us, I think. As for the second misunderstanding, you also wrote in this post, <<<I'm also wondering why you chose to insult me (...you don't meet my standards in, oh, let me count the ways").>>> This was a plain misunderstanding, with a certain amount of my simply not having seen the humor. Probably a male/female thing, maybe a woman-of-a-certain-age one, too, esp. on this thread inhabited by two or three guys into "losing your memory?" jokes. Maybe it's also that even though I noticed you'd self-deprecatingly mentioned 60 pounds overweight, the remark followed another disdainful ref. to the Grammar thread, "just don't expect me to take it seriously," -- so I'm in a "Huh?" state again, before I even I read your: "I like you, E. In fact, if you're under 30 (25 would be better) and have a great body, maybe we can get together sometime." I took it as offensive, which, I absolutely believe you, you didn't intend it to be, and usually I'm not easily offended, and usually I don't need emoticons, either, so I'm ashamed of having misread it and of reacting nastily in this case. I apologize, Michael. I see there is another msg from you in my inbox, so I'll go look at that one now. I had the computer turned off today to keep me from temptation and let me get some work done, so am very behind.
