I live in California, too, John, and as a result, I have great empathy for those who have suffered loss of life and property from earthquakes. We had an abundance of generous volunteers in N. California in '89 when we had our big jolt, and they saved a lot of lives.

I also have read the Millionaire Next Door. My own experience is that the uncharitable trait they cite is an unfair characterization. If I find myself living next to one of those types, I think I'll move to an apartment.
