Well, that is the problem, ensuring safeguards. If discussions of potential regulatory measures are not totally aboveboard, the mistrust will be horrendous, especially since the on- line community tends to be conservative and libertarian, and not only on SI. No one who is a regular user, whatever his political persuasion, wants to see the creepiest sort of surveillance. With some of the crazy hackers out there, who knows what form retaliation might take?
