Will Y2K-Phobic Investors Pull Money From Mutual Funds?

<< They're not buying wind-up radios and canned food, or building concrete bunkers. But mutual fund firms are preparing to hunker down for the Y2K scare.

Employees in Morgan Stanley Dean Witter asset-management division have been told to scrap any year-end vacation plans, one portfolio manager says.

They basically told everybody here that if you've made any plans to take any vacation between Dec. 15 and Jan. 15 to cancel them, says the portfolio manager, who asked not to be named.

The portfolio manager says one of the firm's fears is that Y2K-phobic investors will yank money out of mutual funds at a time of reduced liquidity. >>

Most people are not aware that if a mutual fund can not redeem in cash, the fine print says they can redeem in kind ... ie you may be stuck with the 'dogs' that they can not sell in a falling market.

Thought of the day for fellow Canadians on the thread holding money market funds ... Does your MMF hold paper from Eatons or any of its suppliers? T-Bill funds are available that only yield 1/16 % or 1/8 % less per year.
