I view the R&D spending by high tech companies as guaranteeing their existence for at least (as you stated) a short while longer. However, given the high speed of "life and death" in the high tech "arena" lately, that short while will probably include the disappearance of numerous competitors (who did not have R&D muscle backing them up). Thus, the R&D expenditures are maybe a sort of an investment toward achieving that (stupid) designation of "Gorilla and King" status. (I prefer "Ape and Mother-in-Law" ). Jon.
