* The Teamsters claims to be making progress in its battle to unionize Overnite Transportation, with the National Labor Relations Board certifying the Lexington, KY, election and the Syracuse, NY, and Laredo, TX, terminals filing petitions for Teamsters representation.
* A strike by container haulers in Vancouver, British
Columbia, has spread to the ports of Seattle and Tacoma in the U.S.
* A proposed federal rule change would mean stricter
penalties for carriers rated "unsatisfactory." On a related note, a Louisiana senator has introduced a bill calling for more oversight of motor carrier safety reviews.
* Diesel prices are up the 10th straight week to $1.178. They haven't been that high since late 1997.
