Hi Uncle,
"why does voice recognition need Rambus?"

I cannot answer your professionally, nor offer you facts and statistics. However, based upon my understanding, voice recognition is one of the most (if not THE most) demanding task ever placed upon a computer.
The program must function as a simultaneous translator.

It must deal with:
recognition of the "MASTERS VOICE"
Spelling
Grammar
Context
Language options

But above all, it must do this without recognisable time delay. There can be no other application out there that requires instant access to such a vast amount of memory.
Voice recognition software is a major future app., but has been held up lack of hardware performance. RMBS is an obvious step in the right direction, and I am sure there are be many programmers out there who will exploit the new performance RMBS brings to its limits. The goals are limitless. Think, forget the paper performance figures, how much more would you be prepared to pay for a computer with reliable voice recognition performance?
Having said that, no doubt Dan will tell us how CRAPRAM, or whatever,
will be performing such tasks at a tenth of the price
