*AV*--Like a Ping Pong ball, I have switched sides between DPMI and PLABE many times this year. PLAB was given the edge with its recent IBM announcement but DPMI has always been the premier provider. When a friend of mine left PLAB after more than 12 years to go to DPMI, I inquired why he jumped ship. It came down to his lack of confidence that PLAB could remian as competitive with DPMI as it had in the past. We then jumped from PLAB to DPMI and made some money. The IBM deal had us switch back again.

At today's prices, you might be correct in your assumptions that backing the #1 head sled dog might be appropriate. PLAB's numbers were not stellar and were very unimpressive.

With all the negativity on both sides, I must make it clear that the reticle business will make a strong comeback as most an more designs hit the production floors across the industry. Masks and reticles are high priced commodities that are essential for the IC manufacturers. As more and more circuits are designed or shrunk, the need for reticle sets grows and grows. Like death and taxes, you can't make new devices, expand your factories, or put new smaller design rule technoliges in place without new mask tooling.
