Spring Tide Selects IRE's VPN Technology to Increase Security and Performance of New IP Service Switch

BALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 30, 1999--

Processing Power of SafeNet DSP Enables Value-Added IP Services

by Extending Capabilities of Carrier-Class Platform

Information Resource Engineering, Inc. (IRE) (Nasdaq:IREG), a leading provider of Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology and solutions for secure business communications, today announced Spring Tide Networks, Inc. has entered into an agreement to license IRE's industry leading SafeNet DSP(TM) "Security System on a Chip" to increase the security and performance of its new IP Service Switch 5000 line of carrier-class products. By integrating the SafeNet DSP into its Pipelined PacketFlow(TM) architecture, Spring Tide will be able to provide processing power that enables the platform to terminate and switch more than 100,000 secure tunnels at full-line speed with minimum latency. This strategic partnership will enable Spring Tide to meet the increasing market demand for high bandwidth, secure communications over public IP networks.

Spring Tide's IP Service Switch 5000 product line integrates multiple network functions in a highly scalable, carrier-class platform to provide network-based VPNs and other value-added IP services. Spring Tide is relying on IRE's SafeNet DSP to perform sophisticated cryptographic functions such as public key negotiation and encryption acceleration, which enables the IP Service Switch 5000 to generate more than one thousand keys per second.

"IRE provides Spring Tide with a full solution for providing cryptographic functions and encryption acceleration within one product offering. No other vendor provides a full-featured key generation and encryption acceleration capability inside a single device," said Steve Akers, Co-Founder, CTO, and Vice President of Product Development at Spring Tide. "Integrating IRE's proven SafeNet DSP chip into our IP Service Switch enables Spring Tide to provide industry leading security and performance while meeting our aggressive time-to-market goals."

Value-added IP services such as VPNs represent a tremendous business opportunity to carriers and service providers. According to Infonetics Research, the VPN services market will reach $30 billion by 2003, with more than 65 percent of the total VPN market coming from managed VPN services offered by service providers. Many organizations are choosing all-inclusive network solutions from service providers in an effort to simplify deployment, service provisioning, and billing. However, most service providers do not have all the in-house expertise and resources to develop and deploy state-of-the-art VPNs on their own. By integrating IRE's best-of-breed VPN technology into its carrier-class products, Spring Tide can ensure the security and performance that customers demand, without the investment in costly or time-consuming development efforts.

"IRE continues to forge new territory in the VPN arena by offering solutions for next-generation networks," said Phil Saunders, Vice President of Marketing for IRE. "Our standards-based SafeNet technology ensures the highest levels of security and performance for users, along with the interoperability that service providers require to meet the needs of a varied customer base."

The SafeNet DSP, jointly developed by IRE and Analog Devices, Inc., (NYSE:ADI) is an IPSec-compliant network security solution on a single chip. The SafeNet DSP enables the highest level of network security and the highest data throughput rates achievable over public networks. A single chip can support OC-3 throughput of IPSec-encrypted data with raw throughput of more than 155 Mbits per second using IPSec transform for 3-DES and SHA-1. The SafeNet DSP integrates encryption and hashing hardware and software on a single chip, so all encryption processes take place securely within the device. Unlike multi-chip or software-only solutions, the security keys never leave the chip unencrypted, providing unparalleled security and making FIPS certification easy.
