Mobile phone subscribers top 20 million

The number of mobile phone users has topped the 20 million mark, according to a
tally released by the Ministry of Information and Communication.

Korea's mobile phone penetration ratio has reached 43 percent, that is, 43 people
out of every 100 are using mobile phones.

With 20.05 million subscribers, Korea has the fifth largest total of mobile phone
users in the world after the U.S., Japan, China and Italy, the ministry said.

Mobile phone services were launched in 1984 with a mere 2,600 subscribers. In
1991, the number of subscribers reached one million.

SK Telecom had the largest subscriber base with 8.3 million followed by KT
Freetel's 3.8 million, Shinsegi Telecomm's 2.9 million, LG Telecom's 2.8 million, and
Hansol PCS' 2.3 million, according to the ministry.
