Seems like the XAU would not go up too often when gold went down over $3. I just put the appropriate formulas into my spreadsheets and since January 1984, there were 91 times when gold went down more than $3 and the XAU went up.

The last time was March 16, 1999 when gold went down $3.60 to close at $283.20, and the XAU went up .77 to close at 62.49. Gold is down about 10% since then, XAU is up about 10%.

This is an opinion only:
The volume on the XAU issues was light all day before the last half hour. The option traders, whether OTC or market makers need to cover their positions before close from Saturdays expiration. So in a light market, they have to raise their bids to close out positions. As such a blast in the last 45 minutes happens.

Maybe Bob Johnson wants to go back and see how many times the seperation ocurred on a Monday after expiration?

could it be the strength of the upside of the current 38 week cycle is calling the shots....while the xau is moving within the up part of the cycle it shows its "strength" (especially if we are now into the beginnings of the new bull move)....:)...any sign of strength is what i look for for confirmation that my reading is correct....guree tom at playing the "waves and cycles" and looking for "signs" of the bull.
