China's Robust PC Demand Benefits Taiwan Operators
August 23, 1999 (TAIPEI) -- Taiwan's motherboard makers, which are teaming up with Chinese operators, are climbing on the bandwagon of robust demand across the Taiwan Strait.

A recent survey by Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry (III) indicated that China's PC demand could reach 6.2 million units this year, up 30 percent from last year's 4.70 million, and five times the projection of 1.26 million units for the Chinese market. Over the coming years, China could see PC sales rise to exceed those of Japan, to become the world's second-largest PC market, making inroads into the territory an irreversible trend.

An III spokesperson said China's PC sales reported strong performance in the first quarter, although second-quarter demand appeared flat. Desktops remain a mainstream, with notebooks accounting for only four to five percent of the total market.

Legend Holdings Ltd., China's leading computer maker, continued to rank number one in terms of computer sales in the first half of this year. Great Wall Technology Co., Ltd. made the most impressive progress in the ranking, now numbering third from last year's sixth.

Taiwan's companies such as Micro-Star International Co., Ltd., Elitegroup Computer Systems Co., Ltd. and Giga-Byte Technology Co., Ltd., which have developed joint ventures with these and other Chinese counterparts, are all benefiting from the market boom. Elitegroup, for example, which formed a venture with Great Wall this year, has benefited from the introduction of the latter's low-priced computer, which sells for only 4,888 Chinese yuan.

Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc. is now a leading motherboard maker on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. The company's Chinese market share soared after it set up more than 30 outlets in the territory last year. A company spokesperson said Asustek's monthly output in the Chinese market reached 70,000 units last month, nearly twice that of Taiwan.
