Intel adds new mid-end switch

Network World via NewsEdge Corporation : HILLSBORO, ORE. - Intel unveiled a new 10/100M bit/sec Ethernet switch this week for growing small to midsize customers.

The Intel Express 460T stand-alone switch fits in the middle of Intel's hub/switch product line between the company's unmanaged and managed hubs and its higher end scalable switches. The 460T is useful as a desktop switch in mid-size businesses or as a backbone switch between servers, hubs, print servers and desktops in small businesses.

The box is manageable via Intel's Device View software. The modular 460T operates as a Layer 2 switch that can accommodate a 1000SX or 100FX module. A Layer 2 switch, also called a bridge, is responsible for the forwarding packets based on a unique identifier, called the media access control address, with very little alteration to the packet. Layer 2 switching requires minimal configuration.

In addition, the 460T supports port mirroring and the Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP). In port mirroring, a network manager can assign a port for troubleshooting purposes that will receive the same packets as an existing port. IGMP is an optional protocol used by gateways and servers on a network to establish host membership in an IP Multicast group.

The switch currently is compliant with 802.1p, the specification that allows a Layer 2 switch to prioritize traffic and perform dynamic multicast filtering. A free firmware upgrade in the first quarter of 2000 will make it 802.1Q compatible, capable of virtual LAN support and aggregation.

The 16-port 460T costs $1,800; the 24-port version is priced at $2,100. They are available this month.

In addition, Intel recently reduced the prices of their other switches and hubs by up to 20%.
