I remember Sagan all over the media about the time of the Gulf War saying that the fires there would produce the same effect as nuclear winter and would not be put out for years. Others scientists and events relieved what a jerk Sagan was - the black petrol clouds would not affect the upper atmosphere and the fires were put out in relatively short order.
