Foundry makes Upside's 1999 Hot 100 list

Foundry Networks Inc.
Sunnyvale, Calif.
CEO: Bobby Johnson

Manufacturing and selling the "boxes" that allow enterprises to handle hordes of Web visitors may not be flashy, but it's certainly a growth business. Foundry Networks, launched in June 1996 by four founders of Centillion Networks Inc. (acquired by Bay Networks in 1995), makes gigabit Ethernet switches, routers and server-load balancers to handle the large traffic volumes that clog the sites of Internet service providers (ISPs) and large companies. In February of this year, America Online Inc. announced it was deploying Foundry's switches in its data centers, adding to an already-stellar customer list. After $30 million and three rounds of venture financing, Foundry says it's profitable and poised to enter the public market. -- V.R.
