*Motorola Tops China's Cell Phone Market - Survey

(8/23/99) A recent survey of cellular phone subscribers in eight Chinese cities
revealed that Motorola, Nokia and Ericsson continue to dominate the China market,
the August 19 Zhongguo Xinxi Bao (China Information News) reported.

The survey was conducted by the IT Market Research Institute under HuiCong
International Consultation Company Limited.

The survey was good news for the Schaumburg, Illinois based Motorola, which saw its
market share hold steady at 31.9%, the newspaper reported.

Nokia followed closely behind with a 29.4% market share, and Ericsson pulled up in
third position with 21.4% share, the newspaper said.

The surveyed users said that low to medium grade handsets were their most favored
models. Low-grade handsets were priced at or below RMB 3,000 (US$362.76),
including network access fees.

Handsets that range between RMB 3,000 - 4,000 (US$362.76 - 483.68) were
considered medium-grade handsets, which were also favored by the users.

Of the surveyed, 58.1% use low to medium grade cellular phones, and of these,
33.6% used low grade handsets.

The remaining subscribers (41.9%) said they use high-grade cellular phones that
carry an average price tag over RMB 4,000 (US$483.68).

The survey also discovered that 25% of the subscribers said they follow trends
closely and would replace their handsets with newer models.

Black handsets are still the favorite (29.8%), while blue (13.5%), gray (9.3%) red (7%)
dark green (7.7% ) and yellow (6.1%) were the next most popular handset colors.
