JRH & Bruce Brown:

As an investment, what are the barriers to entry for other companies to come along outside of the main players now doing the surgery? What about the FDA or some other gov't organization that has to approve surgical procedures!?!

It sounds from the MSN article posted earlier today that there are several companies with lasers, either FDA-approved or pending. Similar to pharmaceuticals, once the technology is known, the FDA is not much of a barrier. For example their are classes of drugs in which many Pharmaceutical companies pile in because the market is so large. The "aspirin-like" (motrin, naprosyn, etc.) drugs, the antacids, the H2 blockers for ulcers, etc. are examples. Many drugs of the same type are known as "me too" drugs, and FDA passage is easy. The same can be true for equipment.

Hence, the FDA is a critical barrier to entry for the first of a kind, but less so for all that follow.
