One shouldn't look at Rambus patent position just in terms of DDR. Rambus will soon speed past DDR. The real value of the portfolio is its effect on future competitive Ram architectures.

Rambus has over 50 patents and many look to be quite encompassing. I can't see how a future generation of Ram architecture can be built without infringing some of these patents. So what consortium is going to form if they see no way around Rambus patents?

In five years, will SDRam or DDR be around? Probably not! Will Rambus's intellectual property be at the core of rams? Almost certainly!
